Introductory
Workshop, February 10, 2005: Target audience are people who have
never used MapPlace. This hands-on workshop assumes participants
have basic computer and Internet skills, but no experience with
MapPlace or any GIS, mapping applications. An overview of the
MapPlace was given and the range of data sets available for viewing.
Participants learned how to use the basic tools of select, zoom,
copy, paste, get reports etc. then learned to turn layers on and off
and finally how to print, plot, save files, and linkages to the key
databases for mineral tenure, mineral inventory, mineral potential
and assessment reports. This 3-hour session concluded with an
overview of the topics to be covered in the next workshop on
Intermediate MapPlace. |

Intermediate Workshop, February
17, 2005: Target
audience is the explorationist who is familiar with computer use and
has some previous experience using MapPlace and want to hone their
research skills to identify new exploration targets before they map
select their cells in MTO. This hands-on session briefly reviewed
the basic tools of select, zoom, copy, paste, get reports etc. then
how to turn layers on and off and finally how to print, plot, save
files, and linkages to the key databases for mineral tenure, mineral
inventory, mineral potential and assessment reports. The session
focused on using the geochemical, geophysical, and geology layers to
generate exploration targets and strategies. Map-based analysis was
done using tools for measuring distances, creating buffers and
extracting data from point/polygon intersections. The Exploration
Assistant and Mineral Titles maps were used to do property research.
Advanced topics introduced use of the "Mapper Wrapper" to annotate
the maps; and the "Image Analysis Toolkit" to analyze ASTER imagery. |

Advanced Workshop, February 24, 2005:
Target audience are explorationists who want to
learn use of special GIS tools e.g. MapPlace's "Mapper Wrapper" and
the "Image Analysis Toolkit". They learned to add or import and save
their own data as personal layers in MapPlace, Next they learned to
download MapPlace layers onto a laptop and take to remote field
locations and use offline in the field and then reconnect to online
MapPlace after returning home. High tech prospecting was
introduceded using sophisticated analysis of satellite imagery using
MapPlace's Image Analysis Toolkit. They learned how to make maps
using free downloadable digital map data sets (e.g. digital geology,
digital topography etc). from GeoBase and MapPlace websites. The
simplest approach involved cutting and pasting from MapPlace into
Powerpoint and printing to a PDF file. The more advanced approach
was to download digital files and use them in ArcExplorer (free) and
Manifold GIS (nearly free). |
