Special Reports 1936-1940

The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources manages the province's energy and mineral resources for the benefit of British Columbians, including the regulation of the oil, gas and mining industries to ensure public and worker health and safety.

The Annual Reports document mineral exploration and development, and economic activity related to the mineral resource sector within the province on an annual basis. They contain details of geology, individual and company activity, mineral production, and reserves/resources statistics. These reports contain a wealth of historical information on British Columbia's mining industry.

Printed copies of the Annual Reports of the Ministry, 1874-1979, are available through Crown Publications Inc. in Victoria, however, most of these volumes are "out of print" and no longer available. Many volumes are now only available as the downloadable digital files on this website.

Additional Information on Annual Reports

The Lode Metals sections of the Annual Report, is equivalent in many ways to the publication Geology, Exploration and Mining in British Columbia, for the years 1956 to 1968. From 1969 to 1974, technical reports on geology, mineral exploration, metal mines, placer, industrial minerals, structural materials and coal, formerly included in the Annual Report, were published separately in Geology, Exploration and Mining in British Columbia. In 1975, Geology, Exploration and Mining in British Columbia was divided into three publications: Geology in BC, Exploration in BC and Mining in BC.

The Annual Reports for 1969 to 1970 inclusive, comprise chapters on the mining and petroleum industries, activity of the Ministry, mineral resource statistics, and petroleum and natural gas statistics. In 1980 detailed statistics were transferred to the Information Report series and this volume was entitled the Summary of Operations. In 1985 the statistics were again transferred within the Information Report series to the volume entitled the B.C. Mineral Quarterly.

The 1988 Annual Report covers the 15-month time period January 1, 1987 to March 31, 1988. It represents the transition of the Ministry’s Annual Report from the calendar year to a fiscal year reporting period. This change puts the report of the Ministry’s activity, its annual budget, and its Business Plan on a common 12-month, fiscal-year basis from April 1 to March 31 each year. Annual Reports commencing in 1989, cover this 12-month period.
