Staff of the BC Geological Survey have extensive knowledge of the geology and mineral resources of British Columbia. This knowledge pool has been gained through a wide variety of multi-year geoscience projects, which focused on economic geology, regional bedrock and surficial mapping, geochemical surveys and coal resource assessments. These projects have included studies on some of the more prospective areas in BC and have made significant contributions to understanding the geology and mineral resources of the Canadian Cordillera. Current staff and a summary of their expertise is as follows:

bullet

Yao Cui is the Geomatics Geoscientist.

bullet

Laura deGroot is the MINFILE/ARIS Database Administrator.  She is responsible for maintaining the mineral inventory databases and the BC Geological Survey website.

bullet

Tania Demchuk is the Manager of Geoscience Marketing and Partnerships.

bullet

Pat Desjardins has worked for the BC Geological Survey for 21 years. He began as a regional mapper and mapped the Babine and Telkwa range around Smithers. He is one of the GIS specialists in the branch and provides support to the MapPlace as well as other related GIS needs for the BC Geological Survey.

bullet

Larry Diakow has spent over twenty-three years mapping in British Columbia with an emphasis on Mesozoic and Cenozoic arc magmatism and associated epithermal and porphyry systems.

bullet

Travis Ferbey is the Quarternary Geologist.

bullet

Jay Fredericks is the new Manager of the Mineral Development Office in Vancouver, B.C.

bullet

Kirk Hancock is the Acting Senior Geoscientist for MapPlace/MINFILE.

bullet

Larry Jones is the new Director of Resource Information.

bullet

Rachel Kerr is one of two administrative assistants who support the BC Geological Survey.

bullet

Dave Lefebure is the Director and Chief Geologist of the BC Geological Survey.  He has more than 20 years experience with mineral deposit studies, regional geoscience surveys and mineral exploration in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Currently involved with a wide variety of geoscience-related issues, including economic development, land use planning, database development and distribution, government policies and funding models.

bullet

Andrew Legun specializes in geological mapping, coal and coal related research. He has also worked as a District Geologist. Andrew has carried out geological mapping in the Peace River coalfield and northern Rockies
(with GSC). Assisted in Northern Kechika Trough project (sedex) and compilation mapping in area of Sustut copper deposit. Sub-basin recognition in Aldridge Fm. (Sullivan target) and worked on the Howell Creek structure in southeast BC. Geologic Reconnaissance of Wokkpash park proposal area.

bullet

Ray Lett specializes in the applications of exploration geochemistry to the discovery of new mineral resources. Previous projects, many of which have involved detailed geochemical sampling in areas of high mineral potential, focused on exploration targets such as SEDEX, VMS and gold and PGE bearing vein deposits.

bullet

Jim Logan has completed regional mapping and mineral deposit studies in the Telegraph Creek-Iskut River and Schaft Creek areas of northern BC and the Goldstream area of southern BC. His current project is a study of the geologic setting and controls to mineralization for intrusion related gold occurrences throughout BC.

bullet

Nick Massey has mapped areas favourable for VMS deposits on Vancouver Island and in northern BC. Recent projects have involved provincial scale thematic overviews of the potential for Eskay Creek and SEDEX massive sulphide deposits, new aggregate resources. He is currently working on the digital geological compilation map for BC.

bullet

Mitch Mihalynuk has completed mapping projects in the Haines Triangle (Windy Craggy), Llewellyn gold belt, Tulsequah VMS camp and the Atlin and Dease gold camps of northern BC with emphasis on structural and stratigraphic controls to mineralization. Mitch is currently working on the Atlin Targeted Geoscience Initiative.

bullet

Joanne Nelson has mapped important mineral deposit camps in central and northern BC including the Silvertip and Cassiar camps; Takla Group rocks at Mt. Milligan and in the Nations Lake area and, most recently, as co-leader of the Ancient Pacific Margin Natmap Project, favourable host rocks for VMS deposits in the Finlayson Lake belt.

bullet

Graham Nixon has mapped favourable host rocks for porphyry Cu, skarn and epithermal Au deposits as part of the Northern Vancouver Island project, has studied PGE occurrences associated with Alaskan-type ultramafic-mafic complexes in northern BC and is now working on the PGE potential of alkaline intrusive complexes and Cu-Au porphyry deposits throughout BC.

bullet

Bruce Northcote is the Regional/Staff Geologist based in the Vancouver Mineral Development Office.

bullet

Tasneem Pirani is one of two administrative assistants who support the BC Geological Survey.

bullet

Paul Schiarizza has completed detailed bedrock mapping in the Taseko Lakes-Bridge River, Adams Plateau, Takla Lake areas of BC with a focus on the statigraphic and structural setting of VMS, Sedex and Au bearing vein occurrences. He is currently working in the Little Fort - Canim Lake area of central BC.

bullet

Manager of the Vancouver Mineral Development Office - position is vacant as of June 1, 2007.

bullet

George Simandl is the industrial mineral and gemstones specialist. George has focused on the geology and marketing of a wide variety of industrial mineral deposit types throughout BC and is currently monitoring new developments in the industry.

bullet

Allan Wilcox is the contact for all aspects of mineral industry Assessment reporting. Allan has worked on the development and implementation of the ARIS database system, and recently initiated scanning and delivery of the assessment report library via digital files on the Ministry website.
