Sunshine Coast Aggregate Potential Mapping fieldwork article (pdf)

The market for natural and crushed stone aggregate in British Columbia is growing, but known resources are beginning to dwindle, and the importance of aggregate exploration, land-use planning and resource inventory is escalating. Much of the demand for aggregate in southwestern British Columbia is satisfied by operations located along the Sunshine Coast. This project provides a first-step towards evaluating aggregate resources on a regional scale by providing a first approximation of aggregate distribution within the study area.

The Sunshine Coast study area comprises approximately 310 000 hectares, distributed throughout eighteen 1:50 000-scale map sheets. It is based on a coastal buffer which extends landward approximately three kilometres and stretches from Gibsons to as far north as the head of Bute Inlet. Also included are the major islands along the Sunshine Coast as well as a larger, 5-kilometre buffer in the vicinity of Powell River.

The resulting aggregate potential maps are valuable tools for resource management, urban planning and aggregate exploration in the least. They are available, in digital format only, as Open File 2002-14. They are obtainable for free download and can also be viewed at the interactive Map Place website.

This release consists of a CD-ROM containing: 18 Maps (.pdf): 92F/8, 9, 10, 15, 16; 92G/5, 6, 11, 12, 13; 92J/4; 92K/1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9. It Includes: a project summary (projectsummary.pdf) and an Open File 2002-14 report (OpenFile.pdf); a related Geological Fieldwork article; and Adobe Acrobat version of the map area results; an ArcView copy of the digital data; and, a readme.txt file with instructions. This CD requires three programs to access the data - ArcView, WinZip, and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 (V.5 required).

The data will be available for free download or can be viewed on The Map Place.
