Staff of the BCGS have extensive knowledge of the geology and mineral resources of British Columbia. This knowledge pool has been gained through a wide variety of multi-year geoscience projects, which focused on economic geology, regional bedrock and surficial mapping, geochemical surveys and coal resource assessments.  These projects have included studies on some of the more prospective areas in BC and have made significant contributions to understanding the geology and mineral resources of the Canadian Cordillera.  Current staff and a summary of their expertise is as follows:

    • Melanie Mitchell is the Branch Coordinator and Administrative Assistant for the BC Geological Survey.
    • Yao Cui is the Senior Geomatics Geoscientist.
    • Laura DeGroot is the MINFILE/ARIS Database Administrator.  She is responsible for maintaining the mineral inventory databases and the BC Geological Survey website.
    • Pat Desjardins has worked for the BC Geological Survey for 18 years. He began as a regional mapper and mapped the Babine and Telkwa range around Smithers. He is currently the GIS specialist in the branch and provides support to the MapPlace as well as other related GIS needs for the BC Geological Survey.
    • Larry Diakow has spent twenty-three years mapping in British Columbia with an emphasis on Mesozoic and Cenozoic arc magmatism and associated epithermal and porphyry systems.
    • Ted Fuller is responsible for reviewing mineral assessment reports accepted under the Mineral Tenure Act.
    • Tian Han is the Senior Digital Information Geoscientist.
    • Fiona Katay is the GIS Geologist responsible for province-wide geological data integration.
    • Jim Logan has completed regional mapping and mineral deposit studies in the Telegraph Creek-Iskut River and Schaft Creek areas of northern BC and the Goldstream area of southern BC. His current project is a study of the geologic setting and controls to mineralization for intrusion related gold occurrences throughout BC.
    • Bruce Madu is the director of the Vancouver Mineral Development Office.
    • Mitch Mihalynuk has completed mapping projects in the Haines Triangle (Windy Craggy), Llewellyn gold belt, Tulsequah VMS camp and the Atlin and Dease gold camps and the Iskut gold-VMS-porphyry belts of northern BC.  Experience in the BC Interior Plateau includes the Chilcotin River region and Alkalic porphyry belts around Afton-Ajax and Mount Polley, among others.  His emphasis is on structural and volcano-stratigraphic controls to mineralization. Mitch is currently integrated with the Geological Survey of Canada's Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals, EDGES Program.
    • Joanne Nelson is the Northern BC Manager and Senior Geologist in the Cordilleran Geoscience Section of the BC Geological Survey.  She has mapped important mineral deposit camps in central and northern BC including the Silvertip and Cassiar camps; Takla Group rocks at Mt. Milligan and in the Nations Lake area and, most recently, as co-leader of the Ancient Pacific Margin Natmap Project, favourable host rocks for VMS deposits in the Finlayson Lake belt.
    • Graham Nixon has mapped favourable host rocks for porphyry Cu, skarn and epithermal Au deposits as part of the Northern Vancouver Island project, has studied PGE occurrences associated with Alaskan-type ultramafic-mafic complexes in northern BC and is now working on the PGE potential of alkaline intrusive complexes and Cu-Au porphyry deposits throughout BC.
    • Bruce Northcote is the Regional/Staff Geologist based in the Vancouver Mineral Development Office.
    • Stephen Rowins - Leads the British Columbia Geological Survey in its mandate to attract investment in the mineral resources of BC by undertaking applied geoscience projects and developing and maintaining world class geoscience databases.
    • Alexei Rukhlov is the new Senior Geochemist for the BC Geological Survey.
    • Paul Schiarizza has completed detailed bedrock mapping in the Taseko Lakes-Bridge River, Adams Plateau, Takla Lake areas of BC with a focus on the statigraphic and structural setting of VMS, Sedex and Au bearing vein occurrences. He is currently working in the Little Fort - Canim Lake area of central BC.
    • George Simandl is the industrial mineral and gemstones specialist. George has focused on the geology and marketing of a wide variety of industrial mineral deposit types throughout BC and is currently monitoring new developments in the industry.
    • Allan Wilcox is the contact for all aspects of mineral industry Assessment reporting. Allan has worked on the development and implementation of the ARIS database system, and recently initiated scanning and delivery of the assessment report library via digital files on the Ministry website.

    BCGS Emeritus Scientist Program:
The BCGS of the Ministry of Energy and Mines started an Emeritus Scientist Pilot Program in the fall of 2010.  Retirees of the Geological Survey Branch that have an outstanding record of scientific expertise are potential candidates for the program.

The purpose of the Emeritus Scientist Pilot Program is to permit Survey scientists to continue or return to their research work (or in support of it) in a volunteer capacity.  It also facilitates the collaboration and/or mentoring between new and experienced scientists.  This ensures the effective transfer and preservation of scientific and technical knowledge, skills and experience.

Emeritus Scientist status is normally conferred for a one-year period by the Chief Geologist on the approval of the Assistant Deputy Ministry of the Mining and Minerals Division.  Renewal is subject to review based upon success of the Emeritus Scientist term.  The two Emeritus Scientists currently participating in this pilot program are:

    Regional Geologists throughout B.C.

    Cranbrook:  Dave Grieve, 250-426-1758.

    Kamloops:  Jim Britton, 250-371-3903.

    Prince George:  Paul Jago, 250-565-4132.

    Smithers:  Jeff Kyba, 250-847-7787.
