 A coal lease is a tenure vehicle designed to allow large-scale mining operations.  A coal lease is acquired when an operation moves to its production phase.

The boundaries of a lease must conform to the boundaries of coal licence locations.

An application for a coal lease is made to the Minister and must be accompanied by all of the following:

bulletThe prescribed application fee;
bulleta prescribed rent in respect of the location;
bulleta plan and description of the location under Section 17 of the Coal Act;
bulletA plan of operations showing the exploration, development and production to be carried out on the location during the term of the lease, supported by the data, feasibility studies and other information the minister by require, under the regulations.
