This map area contains 135 recorded mineral occurrences. The
area occurs within the Intermontane belt and is underlain primarily by Upper Paleozoic
rocks of the Cache Creek terrane. These are intruded by several Late Cretaceous and Early
Tertiary batholiths. Since 1898 more than 19,000 kilograms of placer gold
have been recovered from streams in the area. Lode gold exploration has intensified
recently, with the listwanite hosted Yellow
Jacket (104N 043) and Shuksan
(104N 098) prospects being of leading interest. The Adanac
(104N 052) porphyry molybdenum deposit, hosted by the Surprise Lake Batholith, has
reserves of over 152 million tonnes grading 0.063 per cent molybdenum. Other notable
commodities in the area include copper, tungsten, uranium magnesite and asbestos. Geologic
mapping at the 1:50,000 scale in the Atlin area was recently completed by the BC Geological
Survey.
